It's with great sadness that we announce the passing of Nutmeg, always known simply as Meg. She lived almost two years longer than her main man, my Blue Orpington rooster, Suede, and would have turned 8 years old in January. She was not ill, it was just her time to go. Meg died in her daddy's arms. My husband adored this hen and tears streamed down his face as she went into her death throes, the spasms that occur as oxygen leaves the body.
Eternal thanks to Julie Batchelor of Dothan, Alabama, who sent me the eggs from her RIR rooster bred with her huge exhibition Buff Orpington hens to pad the shipment of Blue Orpington eggs that produced big Suede. Meg grew into a flaming red buxom beauty and became the mother of many gorgeous sons and daughters; some of you may remember Traveler or Roosevelt or Hector, three of her sons with Suede. She outlived them all. RIP, our beautiful red girl.
